Update on July 24, 2008
On Saturday, November 25, 2006, three desktop computers were stolen from the University of Idaho’s Office of Advancement Services. Initially there were concerns that personal data of University alumni, donors, students and employees may have been compromised. The University immediately launched an internal investigation to determine the nature of the information on the stolen computers. The investigation revealed that six months prior to the theft the computer hard drives contained datasets with names, addresses and Social Security numbers for approximately 70,000 individuals. As a precaution, the University made a broad public notification about the computer theft to approximately 331,800 individuals (including additional individuals who Advancement may have kept records).
It has been more than 18 months since the theft and the University is pleased to report that there have been no confirmed identify theft incidents stemming from the burglary.
The University will continue to keep a close watch on the situation and appreciate all those affected keeping us apprised of any new reports.
